Meet Samantha

Hi, my name’s Samantha Savery — Sam if we’re friendly. I received my master’s degree in Arts Journalism and Communications from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in July 2021. My work tends to focus on film and television, but I have experience writing about many aspects of culture and the arts.

In 2018, I graduated from the University of North Carolina – Asheville with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication. During my time at UNCA, I served as a copy editor and opinion editor for The Blue Banner, the university’s student-led newspaper, where my editorial, interview, and leadership skills improved.

I currently work as the 4 p.m. producer at WITN-TV in Greenville, North Carolina. First at Four is the only news broadcast with a remote anchor on our channel. This offers a unique challenge, but we make it work and the team here pushes me to be a better producer.

Some of my career highlights include interviewing comedian Catherine Cohen, previewing Steep Canyon Rangers and illusionist Scott Silven and for Spoleto Festival USA, and profiling ArtRage: The Norton Putter Gallery. Some publications I’ve contributed to include CNY Magazine, The NewsHouse and Charleston City Paper.

Podcasts are all I listen to in my Subaru. My mom bakes the best double fudge brownie (here’s a decent dupe). When I need to feel something, I put on some Mitski or Phoebe Bridgers. My closet consists of more sage green, rust and mustard than I once thought humanly possible. And my desert island movies include Kiki’s Delivery Service, Hercules, Funny Face, Little Women and the entire Paddington franchise.
